Beagle Training for Rabbit Hunting
I've been running and training beagles for over 40 years. What I look for in a rabbit dog is simple: nose, drive, and accuracy on the track. A beagle that opens on scent, stays honest on the line, and brings that hare back around to the gun — that's what I produce. My dogs are trained on wild snowshoe hare and cottontail rabbit in Maine's natural cover — thick softwood, regeneration cuts, swamp edges, and old logging roads.
What I Develop in Every Dog
Nose Work
Developing what the dog was born with — putting them on wild game day after day until that natural scenting ability is sharp and reliable.
Chase Drive
Building desire and stamina on the track. A beagle needs the drive to push hard through thick cover and keep after the rabbit when conditions get tough.
Line Control
Staying tight on the track, not cutting corners or swinging wide. A dog that runs the actual line the rabbit took gives the hunter a real chance at a shot.
Check Work
When the scent runs out the dog needs to work systematically to relocate the track. Good check work separates a finished dog from a started one.
Packing
Running well with other dogs, sharing the track, and not interfering. Whether you run a brace or a full pack, your dog needs to be a team player.
Started Dogs
Started dogs are available periodically — beagles I've raised or acquired and trained myself. AKC registered stock when available. Ready to hunt without two years of training.
Programs & Running Season
Board and train is the primary program. Your beagle comes to camp and stays with me for a training block. Dogs get run every day on wild game — not once a week. Puppies start with drag lines and scent trails to build confidence, then progress to live game as they're ready. I don't rush young dogs.
The best time for training runs is fall through spring, when snowshoe hare are active and the conditions are right. Summer months are too warm for productive running in most cases. Guided rabbit hunts are also available — come hunt behind my trained pack and see what a good pack sounds like pushing a snowshoe hare through thick Maine cover.
