Big Woods Whitetails

Deer hunting in northern Maine is a different game than what most people are used to. Up here, you're not sitting on the edge of a soybean field watching deer file out at dusk. This is big woods hunting — vast stretches of hardwood ridges, softwood thickets, old logging cuts, and miles of timber company roads that wind through some of the wildest country left in the East.

I've been hunting these woods for over 40 years, and I know this terrain the way most people know their own backyard. I know where the deer yard up in the winter, where they travel in the fall, and which ridges and clear-cuts hold the best sign year after year. When you hunt with Wadleigh Mountain Camps, you're getting all of that knowledge working in your favor.

Whether you're a seasoned deer hunter looking for a new challenge or a first-timer who wants to learn how it's done in the Maine woods, you're welcome here. We take care of the details — lodging, meals, scouting, and putting you in the right spot. You just need to show up ready to hunt.

The Season

Good opportunity for both bucks and does up here. Northern Maine has its own character when it comes to the deer herd — the animals might not be as numerous as down south, but the bucks that survive a few winters in this country tend to carry good headgear. And with less hunting pressure on the private timberland we have access to, the deer behave more naturally. That makes a difference.

How We Hunt

Tree Stands

Set up on travel corridors, field edges, and funnels where deer move naturally between bedding and feeding areas.

Ground Blinds

Pop-up blinds on clear-cut edges, apple orchards, and logging road crossings — especially effective during the rut.

Still Hunting

Slow, methodical movement through hardwoods and softwood edges. This is how a lot of big Maine bucks are taken.

Deer Drives

Organized pushes through thick cover with posted hunters on escape routes. Effective with a group and good teamwork.

The Camp Experience

Deer camp at Wadleigh Mountain Camps is what hunting is supposed to be. You come in off the mountain after a long day, hang your coat by the stove, and sit down to a hot meal. The stories start, the coffee pot stays on, and you talk about what you saw and where you'll go tomorrow. That's what keeps people coming back year after year.

Your hunt includes lodging right at camp and home-cooked meals — a big breakfast before you head out, lunch to carry with you, and a solid supper when you get back. We keep things simple and comfortable. You're here to hunt, not fuss with logistics.

This is a great trip for groups. Bring your buddies, bring your kids who are old enough to hunt — there's something about a week at deer camp in the Maine woods that builds memories you don't forget. First-time hunters and experienced sportsmen alike are welcome. We'll put everyone where they need to be and make sure the whole group has a good time in the field.
