Bird Dog Training in Maine
I've been training pointing dogs for upland bird work for over 40 years. This isn't a manicured training field with pen-raised quail — my dogs are developed on Maine's actual hunting terrain, in the same thick alder runs, popple cuts, and hardwood ridges where you'll be hunting come October. I work with English pointers, English setters, German shorthaired pointers, and Brittanys. Every dog is different, and I tailor the training to the individual — but the goal is always the same: a steady, reliable bird dog that hunts for the gun, handles kindly, and gets the job done in thick New England cover.

Puppy Foundation
Building the basics from day one — obedience, socialization, introduction to the field, and early bird exposure. Setting the groundwork for everything that follows.
Introduction to Birds
Developing natural point instinct on live birds. Teaching a young dog to use its nose, hold point, and understand what this whole game is about.
Gun Breaking
Proper introduction to gunfire so your dog associates the shot with birds, not fear. Done carefully and correctly — there are no shortcuts here.
Steadying to Wing & Shot
Teaching the dog to hold steady when the bird flushes and the gun goes off. This is where a good bird dog becomes a great one.
Honoring & Backing
Your dog learns to honor another dog's point — no stealing, no crowding. Essential for anyone who hunts with multiple dogs or in a group.
Advanced Field Work
Polishing a dog's range, pattern, and response to handling. Fine-tuning for the dog that has the basics and needs finishing work.
Board & Train / Owner Training
Board and train is the most popular option. Your dog stays right here at camp with me. They eat well, sleep warm, and get daily fieldwork — not once-a-week lessons. Full immersion is how dogs learn best, and that's what they get here.
Owner training is for folks who want to come to camp and learn to handle their own dog. I'll work with you and your dog together so you understand the timing, the commands, and what your dog is telling you in the field.
Dogs in my program get daily runs on real cover with wild grouse and woodcock contacts from the start. No kennel-bound dogs staring at walls between sessions. References available from past clients — I stand behind every dog that goes through my program.
