Maine has the largest moose population in the lower 48 states, and there's no better place to hunt them than the big woods of northern Maine. I've been guiding moose hunters for over 40 years in Wildlife Management Districts 5, 6, and 2 — some of the most productive moose territory in the entire state. These WMDs consistently produce some of the highest success rates Maine has to offer.
When you draw a moose permit, that's a once-in-a-lifetime tag for most people. You don't want to waste it hunting with someone who doesn't know the ground. I know every logging road, bog, and hardwood ridge in this country. I know where the bulls feed in late September, where they come to water, and how they move through the cuts when the pressure's on.

All moose seasons are by permit only through the state lottery. Season dates and WMDs are subject to change by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Maine's Moose Permit Lottery
Moose hunting in Maine is managed through a permit lottery system run by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Every year, a limited number of permits are issued for each Wildlife Management District. The lottery application period is typically April through May — you don't want to miss the deadline.
Both residents and non-residents can apply. If you draw a permit, you're allowed to designate a sub-permittee — a hunting partner who can also carry a firearm and take the shot. Only the permittee or their designated sub-permittee may harvest the moose. That's a great option for folks who want to share the experience.

How We Hunt
Spot & Stalk
We glass logging roads, bogs, clear-cuts, and shorelines at first light and last light. When we find one, we close the distance on foot. This is the bread and butter of moose hunting up here.
Calling
Cow calling and bull grunting during the rut can bring a bull right to you. When it works, there's nothing like it in all of hunting. Early-season hunts in late September are prime time for calling.
Still Hunting
Working through hardwood ridges and softwood edges, reading sign — tracks, rubs, fresh browse — and getting into position. This is quiet, patient work that pays off for hunters who can move slow.
