Maine's Growing Turkey Population

Maine's wild turkey population has grown significantly over the past few decades. What started as a small transplanted flock has turned into a thriving population that has expanded across much of the state. Turkeys are now found in farmland edges, hardwood ridges, and mixed forest throughout central and southern Maine, with the population continuing to push northward.

A note about our location: Wadleigh Mountain Camps sits in far northern Maine, near Wildlife Management Districts 2, 5, and 6. For fall turkey hunting, WMDs 1, 2, 4, 5, and 9 are closed. That means fall turkey hunting right around camp is limited. However, Bob can guide you in open WMDs nearby — WMD 6 is open for fall turkey with a 1-bird limit, and other accessible WMDs in the region also offer fall hunting opportunities.

The real opportunity up here is the spring season. Spring turkey hunting is open across the entire state, including WMDs 1 through 6, and May in the Maine woods is a beautiful time to be calling gobblers. Both shotgun and archery equipment are allowed in both seasons.

Two Seasons, Two Experiences

The fall season runs from mid-September into early November and offers a different kind of turkey hunting. You're working flocks — breaking them up and calling scattered birds back together. It's a challenge that rewards patience and good calling. Both toms and hens are legal in the fall, depending on the WMD.

Spring is the classic turkey hunting experience. Gobblers are fired up, responding to calls, and strutting for hens. There's nothing like hearing a tom sound off on a May morning in the Maine woods. The spring season is open statewide, so we can hunt right here in the north country. Only bearded turkeys are legal in the spring.

Both seasons allow shotgun and archery equipment. If you've never taken a turkey with a bow, the spring season is an incredible challenge — you need to call that bird in tight, and there's no hiding from those eyes.

How We Hunt Turkey

Spring Calling

The classic approach — roosting birds the evening before, setting up in the dark, and calling gobblers into range at first light. Nothing beats hearing a tom thunder back at you on a quiet May morning.

Fall Flock Hunting

Locate a flock, scatter the birds, then set up and call them back together. Fall turkeys are wary and the hunting is a real challenge, but the reward is a unique and exciting experience.

Archery

Taking a turkey with a bow is one of the hardest things you can do in the woods. Both seasons allow archery equipment. We set up ground blinds and decoys to bring birds in close for the shot.
